Is It Islamophobia?
Long before the U.S. President seemed to supported the establishment of a mosque a couple of blocks away from the Ground Zero in New York there were virulent anti- Muslim protests across the entire length of the nation. This nationwide hate protest is quite unprecedented. It is not like there was no form of protests against the establishment of the Muslim community center but those protests were camouflaged within reasons like the community center will obstruct traffic and result in congestion. However, now the Americans are no longer wanting to hide their feelings in tin boxes and have become more forthcoming and they have no qualms about saying in the open what they think about the Muslims- “different and a threat”.
The protests are the outpour of condemnation and this tide of Islamophobia will result in hostility towards the Muslim immigrants and other forms of racism. However what needs to be mentioned here is the provocation over the mosque near the Ground Zero site is founded on the distortion in terms of both its location and the nature of the project proposed. In reality the established community centre is not to be built on Ground Zero but in a warehouse two blocks away, previously used by Burlington Coat Factory outlet.
Though the Republicans are against the idea of the mosque being built near the Ground Zero there has been no official statement or support for the nation wide protests. Informally though, several of them have supported the movement.
